Start early and make this your “cool Kyoto” day: Kurama to Kibune.


Around 8:00, leave central Kyoto for Demachiyanagi, then take the Eizan Railway toward Kurama. Ride the scenic Kurama Line into the northern mountains.


Around 9:15, visit Kurama-dera, then walk the forest trail over the mountain toward Kibune. It is shaded and atmospheric, but still a real summer hike, so wear grippy shoes and carry water.


Around 12:30, arrive in Kibune for kawadoko lunch: Kyoto kaiseki served on platforms over the river. Book this well ahead; Hiroya and Kibune Fujiya are classic choices.
