English began as a West Germanic language brought to Britain by Angles, Saxons, and Jutes in the 5th century; this became Old English, later reshaped by Norse settlement and then heavily transformed after the Norman Conquest of 1066, which flooded it with French and Latin vocabulary.


By the late medieval period, those layers had become Middle English; after printing, standardization, colonial expansion, science, trade, and global media, it developed into Modern English: Germanic in grammar and core words, but unusually hybrid in vocabulary.
